Educating and Empowering Our Youth
By Senator Mark Leno, Dec 22, 2009
Each fall I have the unique opportunity to team up with local community organizations and schools to host events that are designed to empower and educate our young people. Since joining the Legislature in 2003, I have hosted annual youth conferences, in collaboration with community organizations, as part of my ongoing commitment to helping prepare them to become fulfilled, healthy and productive members of society. |
Time to Renew Our Commitment to Education
By Senator Mark Leno, Nov 13, 2009
California boasts one of the largest economies in the world – an economy that continues to require an ever-increasing number of educated, skilled workers. We are a world leader, yet our state ranks 47th in the nation in per-pupil funding for public schools, the very institutions that prepare Californians for college and the workforce. This year’s unprecedented budget crisis, prompted by the global economic downturn, has only made matters worse. Public education funding in California was cut by $11 billion for the 2009-10 budget year. |
Preserving Candlestick Point for Future Generations
By Senator Mark Leno, Oct 26, 2009
In a time of unprecedented and painful state budget cuts, at least 100 of California’s treasured state parks are on the chopping block and could be closed to local residents and visitors. For San Francisco, that means the possible shuttering of Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, the state’s first urban park, which is located in the City’s Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood. |
Celebrating Small Businesses
By Senator Mark Leno, Sep 25, 2009
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. In just the last decade, small businesses have created 60% to 80% of the nation’s new jobs each year and employ nearly half of our workers. There is no doubt that we have had a difficult economic downturn over these last few years. While much of the media focuses on the ups and downs of the largest Fortune 500 firms, the reality is that our economic fortunes or misfortunes are directly tied to the fate of our independent small businesses |
The Need for Housing
Sep 02, 2009
There are few things more important in life than the need for a roof over one’s head. The very basis of our survival is hinged on adequate housing opportunities. Humans over the centuries have developed many variations on the issue of housing, but one thing remains constant, shelter has always been a necessity for survival. I believe that housing is a right for all, not a privilege of the few. It is easy for housing to be taken for granted when one already has it. However, there is always a looming possibility that this situation could change, as evidenced by our recent housing foreclosure crisis nationwide. Whether you own or rent, have a house or an apartment, live in suburbia, rural areas, or in a densely populated city, housing is critical to everyone’s existence. |
