The Mission District: The City’s First Neighborhood

“The Mission is the city’s first neighborhood.” So says Mission District native Bernadette C. Hooper, author of San Francisco’s Mission District, the latest book on San Francisco from Arcadia Publishing. To get to the bottom of this story, Mission Branch librarian Nicole Cuadra spoke with Hooper about her new book. Acclaimed Author to Visit Mission Branch Library

The reviews are in and The Hummingbird's Daughter, the brilliant new novel by award winning author Luis Alberto Urrea, is at the top of everyone’s reading list. The novel, after receiving both critical and popular praise, was selected for this year’s citywide book club, One City One Book: San Francisco Reads. The Spanish language edition of the book, La Hija de la Chuparrosa, will be available in early October.

The last days of summer are drawing near, and the first day of school will be here sooner that you think. As school-aged children return to their academic routines, parents can expect their children to show up with everyone's favorite homework assignment-the research paper. Traditionally, the library has been a good destination for research assignments. Libraries have books, magazines, newspapers, even microfilm. In recent years, however, more and more savvy students are turning to the Internet for their investigations: with so much information literally at their fingertips, a trip to the library is not necessarily required, and that can make a lot of sense.
Every Child Ready to Read

Children have been enjoying storytime at the public library for ages; many of us remember going when we were children. While listening to stories and singing songs is fun for kids, and parents are happy to start their little ones on the library habit, it turns out that there is more benefit to storytime than you might think.
