Tragedy Strikes Bernal as the Community Celebrates Thanksgiving
By Mauricio Vela, Bernal Heights Resident, Dec 14, 2006
On Friday night, Nov. 24, long time Bennington St. resident Chanita Stillerman woke to pounding on her door and the smell of smoke. The rear of her home of 28 years which was recently refinanced was in flames, and her down the stairs tenants and neighbors were running around trying to wake up residents of adjacent homes. |
Fiesta on the Hill — Oct. 15
By Mauricio Vela, Bernal Heights Resident, Oct 08, 2006
Last call for the 18th Annual Fiesta. Come on up to Cortland Ave. and celebrate the diversity of the community and the see old and new Bernal residents come together to celebrate this fantastic neighborhood. You might even find a great restaurant, bar, or shop while you're at it. Hear the sounds of Salvador Santana, and others while shopping the large array of artists and eating from the international cuisine of food. You can also dunk your local politicos such as former Supervisor Katz, Sheriff Hennessey, Assessor Ting or yours truly in the dunking booth if your arm and site are still what they use to be. All of this is a fundraiser for the 28-year-old Bernal Height Neighborhood Center which builds affordable housing, and provides organizing, senior and youth services. What better way to spend money and have it go to a good cause? For more info. call (415) 206-2140 or visit www.fiestaonthehill.com. |
Bernal Outdoor Cinema Off To A Cool Start
By Mauricio Vela, Bernal Heights Resident, Sep 13, 2006
Despite the chill and winds on the top of Bernal Hill, the Bernal Outdoor Cinema held its annual premier on Saturday night Sept. 2 with lots of excitement, creativity and successful attendance. The audience had the opportunity to mingle with the film makers and drink some nice wine and coffee at the Liberty Café before heading up to the top of the hill. Without much lighting, the setting was great. Neighbors began arriving at 7 p.m. and were greeted by tables hosted by the Cinema's Community Partners. The partners included the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, Bernal Preschool, Bernal Preservation, La Cocina, Metropolitan Arts and Technology High School, SF Clean City Coalition as well as others. Estrellita's Snacks provide the Salvadoran snacks and refreshments. Due to the wind chill the coffee sold out quickly. |
Ammiano Brings Home Resources for the Community
Mauricio Vela, Bernal Heights Resident, Aug 05, 2006
As part of the city budget approval process, Supervisor Ammiano was able to secure $300,000 for the Alemany Farm and the Alemany Public Housing Development tenants. The Alemany Farm, which was just recognized by the Bay Guardian in their annual Best of the Bay selections, will use the funds to help in their efforts to reestablish the farm. The Alemany tenants will use their allocation to improve tenant services. Kudos to Supervisor Ammiano for getting the necessary resources to improve a part of the Bernal community that needs much support. |
The Stray Bar: Cortland's Ave.’s New Hot Spot
By Mauricio Vela, Jul 14, 2006
Rumors have been swirling for a while that the Chaise lounge located at 309 Cortland Ave.was changing ownership and was going to become a sports bar. As an active sports fan, a sports bar has been long over due on Cortland. The other two bars, Skip's Tavern and the Wild Side West focus on musical entertainment, pool, and great draft beers with a beautiful garden backyard. The Stray Bar is in the process of putting up two new big screens, hopefully in time for the July 9th World Cup final, as well as improving the sound system and décor. Overall Owner Karen Opp and manager Jones Rivera intend to maintain it current clientele mainly from the GLBT community but also return the bar back to a neighbor as a place to socialize, meet other Bernal folks and cheer on our local sports teams. They are also adding Trivia night as well as drink specials. The bar is open daily from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. and can be reached by calling (415) 821-9263. |
