Public Libraries are Invaluable, Popular
By Mark Leno, Assemblyman, Sep 13, 2006
Greetings Neighbors! Public libraries are more popular and invaluable than ever. With an estimated 1.1 billion visits annually, library attendance numbers in the U.S. far surpass that of all professional and college football, basketball, baseball and hockey sports events combined. Here in San Francisco, citizens have made our public libraries a priority by voting to approve local investments in the system four times within the last 20 years. This commitment to our public infrastructure has given San Franciscans of all ages access to first class libraries and the opportunity for lifelong learning. |
Negociations Heat Up in Sacramento
By Mark Leno, Assemblyman, Aug 05, 2006
Greetings Neighbors! With the closing days of summer fast approaching, I hope you have taken full advantage of the many activities San Francisco has to offer this season, such as Sunday afternoon concerts at the Stern Grove festival, regional and city parades, or simply taking a walk in your own neighborhood. |
The U.S. means freedom, liberty
By Mark Leno, Assemblyman, Jul 14, 2006
Greetings Neighbors! It was only 225 years ago that an optimistic new country was born out of a group of immigrants’ quest for independence and freedom. We celebrate the birth of our country every July Fourth as the day that our forefathers and mothers claimed America’s independence from Great Britain. The U.S. has become synonymous with words like “freedom” and “liberty” possibly because those who immigrated here knew what it meant to be without them. |
LGBT Struggle Continues to this Day
Mark Leno, Assemblyman, Jun 06, 2006
Greetings Neighbors! Welcome to Pride Month in San Francisco! This marks the 36th year that cities across the nation have celebrated Pride as a way to highlight our beautiful diversity and support civil liberties for all. Pride is also when we appreciate the hard work of pioneering advocates who came before us and who struggled for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community's right to be treated with dignity and respect-a struggle that continues to this day. |
S.F. is a City of Volunteerism
By Mark Leno, Assemblyman, May 09, 2006
One of the many reasons I am so proud to be a San Franciscan is our long history of volunteerism to help others in our community. In fact, our City's namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, was the patron saint of charity and compassion. We honor this legacy every time we devote our time and attention to worthy causes that benefit society as a whole. I would like to remind you of some of the many ways you can get involved with volunteer work in our community. |
