Bike Plan Injunction Twists Intent of Environmental Protection Law
By Fran Taylor, Member of Walk San Francisco, Jan 16, 2007
An injunction to delay the citywide bike plan is called a simple procedural ruling by the individual who sought it. Press coverage implies that the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is simply trying to pull a fast one, slithering out of its responsibility to air public comment. The issues involved, however, are actually mind-numbingly complex. Nonwonks may feel overwhelmed by acronyms as they try to understand the arcane arguments discussed before Judge Peter Busch. Some arguments may not make sense because they, well, don't make sense. |
Pressure Builds for Muni Improvements
By Fran Taylor, Member of Walk San Francisco, Dec 14, 2006
Simmering public dissatisfaction over Muni service is finally hitting home, and riders have several opportunities this month to express their opinions. But activists working with transit officials on a comprehensive overhaul are finding the process frustrating. A District 5 town hall in early November drew about 100 residents, who listened politely to new Municipal Transportation Agency director Nathaniel Ford but also burst into loud applause or hissing at suggestions that service be improved or fares increased again. Acknowledging that service has suffered, Ford said that Muni is “in the midst of a rapid rehiring of maintenance staff and drivers.” |
Faraway Cities Offer Insights on Transit Problems
By Fran Taylor, Member of Walk San Francisco, Nov 08, 2006
Travel to distant places can shed fresh light on local transportation issues. Two trips to three places-New Orleans, a cluster of cities in Alabama, and New York City-offered perspectives on transit justice, the consequences of transit inequality, and the potential of metropolitan planning. No site perfectly mirrored San Francisco, but altogether they showed what works and put transportation in context. |
Day Laborers Provide Model for Green Travel
By Fran Taylor, Member of Walk San Francisco, Oct 08, 2006
A population of workers that gets around almost exclusively by foot, bicycle, and bus is nonetheless accused of snarling traffic. The accusations come from drivers. This through the looking glass logic typifies life as a day laborer in San Francisco. Finding work is one problem. Getting to it is another. Fending off attacks from neighbors and police adds one more layer of difficulty. |
Top Ten Honor Enrages Neighbors
By Fran Taylor, Member of Walk San Francisco, Sep 13, 2006
Making the top ten of a list is usually a source of pride. Not, however, when the list is “Highest collision total intersections . . . resulting in injury.” Neighbors of Cesar Chavez and Mission Streets, which made that list in the San Francisco 2005 Collision Report released in July by the Department of Parking and Traffic, are not proud of the distinction. |
